| Carhenge is a Stonehenge replica built from cars in 1987.
It's a few miles north of Alliance in Western Nebraska.
I first learned of Carhenge from the documentary Carhenge: Genius or Junk? at the 2006 Estes Park Film Festival. Carhenge is surprisingly impressive, even to someone who has seen the film, mostly because the huge shapes stand out against the flat prarie. Carhenge probably wouldn't work at all in a more crowded setting. Parts of Carhenge reminded me of Cadillac Ranch, near Amarillo, Texas, which I saw in the mid-1990s but didn't photograph. Autohenge, created in Ontario a year before Carhenge, may have been a more authentic replica of Stonehenge, but it lasted for only 5 years. | |||||||||||
